What is Poha?

Poha is a light, healthy Indian breakfast made with flattened rice, onions, mustard seeds, curry leaves, peanuts and mild spices. It’s quick, tasty and perfect for busy mornings.

Poha is light on stomach, easy to digest and packed with flavours.

This is one of the most popular breakfast dishes enjoyed across India.

The recipe I am going with is for 5 to 6 people. Now this also varies from person to person, what their appetite is.

Easy Poha Recipe ( Step by Step)

Ingredients

  • 4 cups poha
  • 2 onions chopped
  • 4 to 6 green chillies chopped
  • 1 potato chopped
  • 6 to 7 curry leaves
  • Handful of coriander leaves
  • 4 tbsp oil
  • Half cup peanuts
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 2 tsp salt or as per taste
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • Bhujiya sev (optional)

Method

  • Wash Poha- Rinse poha in a strainer throughly and keep aside.
  • Temper- Heat oil in a pan, add peanuts and fry till colour changes and remove.
  • In the same pan add cumin seeds let it turn light brown in colour, then add in onions, potato, green chilli, curry leaves, peanuts with all the spices given.
  • Give it a nice mix add salt, cover with a lid and cook for 2 minutes or till the potato is done.
  • Open the lid give it a nice mix add the washed poha in the masala, combine everything well.
  • Add sugar and lemon juice, mox this also and cover with a lid again for few seconds.
  • Open the lid mix it again, garnish with coriander leaves and top it with sev.
  • Enjoy Poha for your breakfast
