Hariyali Dal Recipe| Palak Methi Bathua Dal


Hariyali Dal is a wholesome, nutritious and flavour- packed Indian dal made with a blend of tuvar dal,chana dal and fresh leafy greens like palak, bathua and methi. This green dal is rich in nutrients, has a beautiful colour and pairs wonderfully with rice or rotis.

In this recipe, we boil the leafy greens, make a smooth paste, cook dal in pressure cooker, mix everything with a rich onion-tomato masala and finally top it with a fragnant desi ghee tadka of cumin, mustard,dry red chilli and kashmiri red chilli powder.

Perfect to enjoy with rice, roti or jeera rice!

Ingredients for Dal

  • 1 cup tuvar dal
  • 2 tbsp chana dal
  • 2 cups palak/ spinach
  • 1 cup bathua/Lamb’s Quarters
  • 1/2 cup methi leaves/ fenugreek
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 2 cups water
  • Pinch of asafoetida/ Hing

Masala Base:

  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • green chilli, ginger and garlic paste.
  • 2 tbsp For first tadka
  • 2 tbsp fresh cream

For second Tadka

  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 to 3 dry chillies
  • 1 tbsp kashmiri red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tbsp chopped garlic or greens

Method

  • Boil palak, methi and bathua, strain and blend to a fine puree. keep aside
  • Wash the tuvar and chana dal in a cooker add salt, hing, turmeric and water.
  • Pressure cook till 3 whistles, let it cool down
  • Take a pan heat oil add in the onions, saute till light brown in colour, then add in ginger, garlic and green chilli paste, let them cook well. now add in tomatoes cook till done.
  • Pour in the cooked dal in the pan, mix well
  • Add the green puree into the dal, garam masala powder and cream let it boil for 1 minute.
  • Let’s give it the second tadka, heat a pan with ghee add in cumin, mustard seeds, let it crackle
  • Now add dry red chilli and garlic, let them fry till light brown, add in the kashmiri red chilli powder, cook well
  • Pour the tadka on the dal, Hariyali Dal is ready to be enjoyed with rice, roti or naan.
